For Sale and Directional Signs

Please be aware that the City of Springfield's zoning ordinance makes it illegal to place "For Sale" signs and "Directional" signs in public easements or public rights-of-way (e.g., signs placed between the street and the sidewalk, signs placed at sudivision entrances, etc.). Directional signs placed at the end of the street, even with permission from a neighbor is also in violation of the ordinance. This prohibition has been in effect for several years.

If you are a REALTOR: The association strongly encourages you to refrain from placing signs in these restricted areas. To continue to do so only makes us look bad as an industry, places undue pressure on those who adhere to the law and will help to avoid the imposition of even more restrictive ordinances. Please keep in mind that this is not unique to the City of Springfield and that many local municipalities in the area have similar sign restrictions. We have been told by city officials that open house directional signs will not be bothered if they are taken down promptly after an open house is held.

If you are a Home Seller: Please do not ask your REALTOR to place for sale signs in restricted areas. Please understand that your REALTOR is simply adhering to the law when they explain that they are unable to accommodate your wish in this regard. Yard signs are just one of the many tools that a REALTOR utilizes to sell your home. In 2001 only a small percentage of home buyers learned about the home they purchased from a yard sign while nearly half of all home buyers learned about the home they purchased from their real estate agent.

If you are a For Sale by Owner: We encourage you to list your home for sale with a professional. For reasons why you should list your home with a professional go here. If you decide not to list your home with a professional we would encourage you to adhere to the sign restrictions along with everyone else.
